The Art of Creative Pruning. Inventive Ideas for Training and Shaping Trees and Shrubs

$148.90

All that’s needed to recreate the effect in the garden are a sharp pair of pruners, some imagination, and the instruction found in TheĀ Art of Creative Pruning.

This book was recommended to me and has proved to be just the job. Well written and covering many types of trained trees and topiary shrubs, it was just what I was looking for to research pleached hedges and other kinds of ornamental pruning. If you are interested in Japanese training, this book will be invaluable.

Description

Nothing brings a touch of artistry to the garden like ornamental pruning, and a series of deliberate cuts can create landscapes and evoke faraway places. All that’s needed to recreate the effect in the garden are a sharp pair of pruners, some imagination, and the instruction found inĀ The Art of Creative Pruning. Drawing on both eastern and western styles, author Jake Hobson moves beyond the traditional lollipops and animals and teaches a wholly new approach to ornamental pruning that appeals to modern sensibilities.

Picture boxwoods trimmed into whimsical Russian nesting dolls, hedges inscribed with words, and a tree snipped to resemble the toppling tiers of a wedding cake. These are just a few of the unusual ideas featured in the beautifully photographed pages. All the practical considerations are here as well, including pruning to improve a view, remedial pruning to fix problems, and pruning fruit trees to increase yield.

I was in the garden for the first time and wanted to learn about tree trimming book has lots of beautiful photos but not much information on how to treat the trees. More for advanced gardening, although really a lot of information in general More about tree trimming can be found in the second book by Jacke Hobson

If you’re an older gardener approaching retirement, this shows what can be accomplished in a few years, and some worthwhile projects you can start to but your “stamp’ on your gardens. If you have some fast growing trees, for example, such as Sycamores, Persimmons, hollies–you can achieve something in just a few years. Pines take longer on the Japanese designs–and it takes some courage to make these drastic prunings–but this book shows how to do it.
